Over the years, Daniel has trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while living in Perth, London, Melbourne, and Brisbane. He has also attended classes while traveling in Japan and Malaysia, further enriching his experience. He enjoys the technical aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, particularly the application of leverage, force, and momentum in training.

In addition to his martial arts background, Daniel is a qualified yoga instructor specializing in yoga for martial artists. His teaching focuses on developing strength and flexibility, helping athletes enhance their performance and prevent injuries.

Once upon a time, a dad enrolled his 4-year-old son in Jiu-Jitsu classes to help him develop physical and life skills. Twelve years later, that dad finds himself unexpectedly addicted to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His son has recently reached adult ranks in BJJ, and his other child is tapping out opponents in the kids' ranks. Somehow, I've managed to work my way up to a brown belt, and I've recently started instructing to help guide other enthusiasts through the vast BJJ catalog. I still learn new techniques or variations in every training session.

Of course, teaching other grapplers comes with its challenges, especially when they start becoming more formidable opponents, but that’s a good problem to have, right? My philosophy for BJJ is this: if you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong. That said, not every day is going to be great—there will be days when you get dominated, when nothing seems to work, and you wonder why you even put on the gi. Those days drive you to improve.

Having trained in JKA and Tae Kwon Do for comparison, I can say that BJJ is no easy sport. When I encounter difficulties, I talk to fellow rollers, senior club members, and Coach Jeremy to find solutions and then move on to the next challenge. Would I recommend BJJ to others? Absolutely. And would I recommend Grand Martial Arts? Also yes. In my opinion, Grand Martial Arts isn’t a hardcore “win at all costs” academy; it focuses more on technique, concepts, and sustainability, maximizing both your enjoyment and longevity in the sport.

At nearly 52, injury prevention and fitness are essential to me, and this club hits both marks. If you come to the Monday (all levels) night classes, you’ll find me working with students, focusing on one aspect of BJJ in a four-week series to reinforce learning and build muscle memory. It would be great to see you there!

Oliver started martial arts in 2012 just after finishing prep. He began his martial arts journey with Japanese ju-jitsu in which he is now a brown belt. In 2018 he began training Brazilian ju-jitsu and is now a blue belt. He believes that martial arts are amazing and teaching discipline that helps both kids and adults alike to grow and improve themselves. He also believes that martial arts particularly ju-jitsu teach basic and yet essential understanding of biomechanics or how your body moves and functions that everyone should learn such as how to fall safely. Overall Oliver believes that martial arts are an amazing tool in personal development and betterment of your physical and mental health.

Hey team - I’m coach Jack! I came on board at GMA in 2024, as the resident tutor at the dojo. That way we can help your kid reach their potential on and off the mat! Currently, I am studying Secondary Education, majoring in English & Spanish. I have 4 years under my belt as a personal trainer and 5 years of striking & sparring experience, in Boxing & Muay Thai (although, my grappling needs some work!). When I’m not busy tutoring, I occasionally help as an assistant coach in the kids’ self-defense & BJJ class.
